How to Hang a Porch Swing with Chains

How to Measure and Plan for Porch Swing Installation

Selecting the Hanging Location

Observe the material of the hanging location. Porch swings are generally hung on beams or ceilings with load-bearing capacity, usually made of wood, concrete, or steel.

Note: Do not hang a porch swing from a plaster surface.

Additionally, if the beam is too small, its load-bearing capacity may not be sufficient for hanging the porch swing. It is recommended that the beam size should be at least 5 × 15 inches.

Determine the spacing and position of the two suspension points

Use the tape measure to measure the distance between the fixing points on both sides of the porch swing for the chains and then mark it on the beam.
Reserve enough space around the porch swing (at least 80 cm front and back, at least 30 cm left and right) to avoid hitting anything when swinging.

Please note that the length of the marks on the beam should be a little longer than the distance between the fixing points on both sides of the swing (suggested 5-10 cm wider) to prevent the chains from rubbing the swing and causing damage.

Calculate and determine the required porch swing chain length

Total chain length = distance from ground to beam – distance from ground to bottom of porch swing

The ideal distance from the bottom of the porch swing to the ground is about 45cm to 60cm, which allows users to sit more comfortably and have their feet on the ground

Example: If the height of the beam is 300cm, the chain length is about 250cm, including the reserved length for the hook.

How to Install Porch Swing Chains

Install Hanging Bolts or Eye Screws

Drill holes at the marked positions and insert expansion bolts.
Screw the lag eye screw into the hole until the threads are fully inside, then use a wrench or other tool to tighten and secure it.

Please note that if hanging on a metal beam, it is necessary to fix it with a nut on the other side of the beam to ensure stability.

Assemble Porch Swing Chains

Connect the porch swing chain to the lag eye screw via quick link or an S-hook with a safety latch.
Align the bottom of a short chain with the long chain, then connect the top of the short chain to the long chain through a quick link or similar connector to form an inverted Y shape.

How to Hang the Porch Swing

Both sides of the chain must be installed following the above steps. After installation, connect the bottom end of the long chain to the front of the seat and the short chain to the back of the seat.
Use a level to check if the seat is horizontal and make fine adjustments by adjusting the chain length.
